[Part 04] MY WIFE DIED YEARS AGO… AND EVERY MONTH I SENT HER MOTHER $300

The Truth That Changes Everything

I stared at her.

Waiting for the punchline.

The explanation.

The correction.

But it never came.

“That’s not funny,” I said.

“I’m not joking.”

Her voice didn’t shake.

Didn’t hesitate.

And that terrified me more than anything.

“Who?” I demanded.

Marina hesitated.

Then said something I never expected:

“Someone close to you.”

My chest tightened.

“No.”

“Yes.”

“No, that’s—”

“You trusted them,” she continued. “You worked with them. You let them into your life.”

I took a step back.

My mind racing.

Searching.

Rejecting.

“Why would anyone want to kill you?” I asked.

“Because of what I knew.”

“What you knew about what?”

She exhaled slowly.

“Your company.”

Everything stopped.

“No,” I said again. “That’s impossible.”

“I saw things, Rob,” she said. “Things I wasn’t supposed to see. Money moving in ways that didn’t make sense. Deals that didn’t feel right. People who weren’t who they claimed to be.”

My stomach dropped.

“And you’re telling me,” I said slowly, “that instead of coming to me… you disappeared?”

“I tried,” she said quietly. “But I realized something.”

“What?”

“You weren’t listening anymore.”

That hurt.

Because it was true.

“They would’ve killed me,” she continued. “So I let the world believe I was already gone.”

“And the funeral?” I asked.

“A closed casket,” she said. “No one questioned it.”

My hands trembled.

“Do you have any idea what that did to me?”

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Yes.”

“Then why didn’t you come back?” I demanded.

“Because it wasn’t safe.”

“And now it is?”

She hesitated.

And that hesitation told me everything.

“No,” I whispered.

Before she could answer—

A sound came from outside.

A car.

Doors slamming.

Voices.

Marina’s face went pale.

“They found me.”
