THE DISAPPEARANCE
Poison.
The word echoed in Tomás’ mind like a nightmare he couldn’t wake up from.
“No… that’s not possible,” he repeated.
But the doubt was already there.
Growing.
Spreading.
He stepped outside the hospital, pulling out his phone again.
Leticia.
Call.
Voicemail.
Again.
Nothing.
Then suddenly—
A message.
Unknown number.
His heart skipped.
He opened it.
“Stop calling me. I need time. Don’t look for me.”
Tomás stared at the screen.
Time?
While their daughter was dying?
Rage surged through him.
But beneath it—
Fear.
He called the number immediately.
This time—
It rang.
Once.
Twice.
Then—
She answered.
“Leticia! Where are you? Alma is in the hospital!”
Silence.
Then her voice.
Cold.
Distant.
“I know.”
Tomás froze.
“You… know?”
“Yes.”
His blood ran cold.
“What did you do?” he whispered.
“Don’t start, Tomás.”
“DON’T START?!” he shouted.
“Our daughter is fighting for her life!”
“She’ll be fine.”
That calmness…
It wasn’t normal.
It wasn’t maternal.
It was—
empty.
“Where have you been?” he demanded.
Another pause.
Then—
“I needed to leave.”
“Leave? You left two children alone for three days!”
“I couldn’t take it anymore,” she snapped.
“Take what?!”
“You! Your perfect life! Your control!”
Tomás stepped back, stunned.
“This isn’t about me—this is about Alma!”
“No,” she said quietly.
“This is about everything.”
Then the line went dead.
Tomás stood there, shaking.
His wife wasn’t just gone.
She wasn’t just careless.
Something was very wrong.
And now—
His daughter might pay the price.
